How Should Anti-Anxiety Pills Be Taken?

Before taking the anti-anxiety pills, it’s necessary to get into the root cause of the anxiety problems. There are three types of treatment for the anxiety: psychotherapy, exercise and medications. When it comes to medications, the anti-anxiety pills must be taken by the proper consultation of doctor by going through the overall history of the patient. The medications which are being used are Anti-depressants, Benzodiazepines, Hydroxyzine, Buspirone and beta-blockers. There are different sub-categories within these categories of medications which have different purposes, side-effects and risks. Every case is different for different individuals but the most common symptoms are panic, fear, discomfort, uneasiness, sleeping problems, inability to stay peaceful and calm, cold, numb, sweaty, trembling hands and feet, dry mouth, shortness of breath, nausea and heart palpitations. The choice of the anti-anxiety pills should also be dependent on what type of symptoms one is experiencing. For the person who is having panic or social anxiety disorder the pills should be different. And for the ones who are having different kind of anxiety phobias, the treatment through medications would be different.

How Do Anti-Anxiety Pills Work?

Not all anti-anxiety medications are exactly the same and it is essential to differentiate between the different categories of medications for the proper treatment of anxiety. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) are the most common medications because these are proved to be helpful in the treatment of anxiety. These medications are also non-addictive and don’t cause memory complications. But it starts working completely from 4 to 6 weeks and the abrupt withdrawal can result into detrimental effects. It can also be a cause of manic epiosde if the patient is also suffering from bipolar disorder, in that case the beneficial results are extracted from it by using it with a mood stabilizer which can serve the purpose. It is also reported by a few experts that SSRIs can increase the likelihood of suicide in young adult patients. It works by causing an increase in the communication between neurons. Serotonin Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs) works same as SSRISs but it increases the amount of signaling between neurons by the use of chemical called noreponephrine. Benzodiazepine is the class of medication which consists of the well-known drugs. It is used to cause tolerance due to which it is needed to be taken for a longer period of time to fulfill the purpose. For the first few weeks of treatment, it is used in combination with SSRI but it can’t be used as a first-line treatment without the care of a psychiatrist. Ativan (Lorazepam) is one of the Benzodiazepine tablets which works by acting on brain and nerves in order to produce a calming effect for the patient. It also increases the effect of natural chemicals in the body. Busron (Buspirone Hel) is prescribed for the treatment of anxiety disorder as an anti-depressant. Klonopin (Clonazepam) works by increasing the effects of GABA in the brain. Valium (Diazepam) is used to treat the after effects of alcohol and muscle spasms from nerve disorders and injury. Xanax (Alprazolam) also works by producing the calming effect in order to treat panic disorder. Buspirone is the medication which works same as SSRI by affecting the neurons. Hydroxyzine is another medication which works quickly than Benzodiazepine and doesn’t cause memory impairment, withdrawal and tolerance. Gabapentin is also being used for the treatment of seizures and nerve pains.

Success Rate Of Anti-Anxiety

The anti-anxiety medications which are being used for the treatment of anxiety and panic disorders appear to be beneficial if these medications are prescribed by taking care of all the associated factors and root causes. Among all others, the SSRIs have also proved to be beneficial for the treatment of general anxiety. Moreover, Benzodiazepine is successfully used for the treatment of specific phobias in different number of doses which varies person to person. But to treat phobias in a better way, it’s important to not completely rely on medications and also involve different therapies and coping skills to overcome the fears. For those who are suffering from social anxieties, are prescribed with beta-blockers which have turned out to be truly beneficial for the treatment of such social phobias. However, according to some studies, the success of beta-blockers is not guaranteed for all types of social anxiety but it is found to be really helpful in treating the mild social anxieties. Those who suffer from depression with panic and anxiety are highly recommended for anti-depressants which can really help in reducing the effects of depression and anxiety. For the post-traumatic disorders, the SSRIs medication is used by choice but according to the studies the benefits of using Anticonvulsants, anti-depressants and MAOIs are quite clear. However, the development of new drugs and medications still continues for the more effective results.

Anti-Anxiety Drug Dependence And Withdrawal

Most of the anti-anxiety pills would lead to dependence when taken for a longer period of time. The patient starts feeling the need of these pills to lead a normal and temporarily happy life. Due to the addiction, they are then being forced to the withdrawal which leads to devastating results. In general, the anti-depressants, Xanax, Valium and SSRIs would lead to the most withdrawal effects. The effects would also vary from person to person. It is also possible that some of the patients won’t be facing any withdrawal effect at all. The symptoms of the withdrawal are mostly consist of the cravings, sleeplessness or excessive sleep, extreme anxiety and panic attacks, dry mouth, nausea, dizziness, cold sweats, palpitations and many others. Not only this, but the withdrawal can also lead to life threatening situations like the unbearable pain, seizures or rapid heartbeat. The withdrawal from SSRIs can also lead many patients to suicide. It’s because most of them become so dependent on the medications that they feel like not getting over the pain without using the medications which makes them fed up from their life and they prefer quitting rather than living with the pain of helplessness. Considering the devastating results of dependence and withdrawal, people suffering from anxiety must be taking the drugless self-help options into consideration by taking the help from a psychiatrist who use physical therapies and coping skills to deal with the situation.
